Abundances of metal - weak thick - disc candidates

چکیده

High resolution spectra of 5 candidate metal-weak thick-disc stars suggested by Beers & Sommer-Larsen (1995) are analyzed to determine their chemical abundances. The low abundance of all the objects has been confirmed with metallicity reaching [Fe/H]= −2.9. However, for three objects, the astrometric data from the Hipparcos catalogue suggests they are true halo members. The remaining two, for which propermotion data are not available, may have disc-like kinematics. It is therefore clear that it is useful to address properties of putative metal-weak thick-disc stars only if they possess full kinematic data. For CS 22894-19 the abundance pattern similar to those of typical halo stars is found, suggesting that chemical composition is not a useful discriminant between thick-disc and halo stars. CS 29529-12 is found to be C enhanced with [C/Fe]=+1.0; other chemical peculiarities involve the s process elements: [Sr/Fe]= −0.65 and [Ba/Fe]=+0.62, leading to a high [Ba/Sr] considerably larger than what is found in more metal-rich carbon-rich stars, but similar to LP 706-7 and LP 625-44 discussed by Norris et al. (1997a). Hipparcos data have been used to calculate the space velocities of 25 candidate metal-weak thick-disc stars, thus allowing us to identify 3 bona fide members, which support the existence of a metal-poor tail of the thick-disc, at variance with a claim to the contrary by Ryan & Lambert (1995).

Searching for the metal-weak thick disc in the solar neighbourhood

An abundance analysis is presented of 60 metal-poor stars drawn from catalogues of nearby stars provided by Ariyanto et al. (2005) and Schuster et al. (2006). In an attempt to isolate a sample of metal-weak thick disc stars, we applied the kinematic criteria Vrot ≥ 100 km s , |ULSR| ≤ 140 km s , and |WLSR| ≤ 100 km s . Fourteen stars satisfying these criteria and having [Fe/H] ≤ −1.0 are includ...

The Chemical Compositions of Galactic Disk F and G Dwarfs

Photospheric abundances are presented for 27 elements from carbon to europium in 181 F-G dwarfs from a differential LTE analysis of high-resolution and high signalto-noise spectra. Stellar effective temperatures (Teff) were adopted from an infrared flux method calibration of Strömgren photometry. Stellar surface gravities (g) were calculated from Hipparcos parallaxes and stellar evolutionary tr...

Kinematics of Nearby Subdwarf Stars

We present an analysis of the space motions of 742 subdwarf stars based on the sample of Carney et al.(1994). Hipparcos parallaxes, TYC2+HIP proper motions and Tycho2 proper motions were combined with radial velocities and metallicities from CLLA. The kinematical behavior is discussed in particular in relation to their metallicities. The majority of these sample stars have metal abundances of [...

Three-dimensional Orbits of Metal-poor Halo Stars and the Formation of the Galaxy

We present the three-dimensional orbital motions of metal-poor stars in conjunction with their metal abundances, for the purpose of getting insight into the formation process of the Galaxy. Our sample stars, which include metal-deficient red giants and RR Lyrae variables observed by the Hipparcos satellite, are least affected by known systematics, stemmed from kinematic bias, metallicity calibr...

Early Evolution of the Galactic Halo Revealed from Hipparcos Observations of Metal-poor Stars

The kinematics of 122 red giants and 124 RR Lyrae variables in the solar neighborhood is studied using accurate measurements of their proper motions by the Hipparcos astrometry satellite, combined with the published photometric distances, metal abundances and radial velocities. A majority of these sample stars have metal abundances with [Fe/H]≤ −1 and thus represent the old stellar populations ...
